156 countries agree to Covid vaccine allocation deal .

A coalition of 156 countries has agreed a “landmark” deal to enable the rapid and equitable global distribution of any new coronavirus vaccines to 3% of participating countries’ populations, to protect vulnerable healthcare systems, frontline health workers and those in social care settings .

The Covid-19 vaccine allocation plan – co-led by the World Health Organisation   and known as Covax – has been set up to ensure that the research, purchase and distribution of any new vaccine is shared equally between the world’s richest countries and those in the developing world.

Sixty-four higher income economies have already joined Covax, which includes commitments from 35 economies as well as the European commission, which will procure doses   on behalf of the 27 European Union  member states plus Norway and Iceland   with 38 more expected to join in the coming days.

Ultimately the scheme aims to deliver 2 bllion doses of safe, effective vaccines around the world by the end of 2021.

Recognising that the first useful vaccines to emerge may be in short supply, approved vaccines will initially be made available to a tightly targeted 3% of the population of participating countries, building over time to 20% of each country’s most vulnerable population .

China’s Sinovac plans to test COVID-19 vaccine on children.

This week the Chinese vaccine maker Sinovac announced it will launch a Phase I and II cllinical trial  later this month to test its vaccine in over 552 children ages 3 to 17 in China. The trial will test both the safety of the vaccine and also examine whether it produces an immune response among the participants.

Experts say the need to conduct COVID-19 vaccine safety trials specifically among children is clear, but that holding the trials before a vaccine has been proved safe and effective among adults represents uncharted and ethically fraught territory.

The trial has already approved by the Chinese regulator, a Sinovac spokesperson said, according to Reuters. The Chinese vaccine maker’s shot is already in the final stage of study with adults.

CoronaVac, being tested in final-stage large-scale trials in Brazil, Indonesia and Turkey, has already been given to about 90% of the company’s employees and their families.

Sinovac said earlier this month CoronaVac appeared to be safe and able to induce antibodies for older people, while the vaccine-generated antibody levels were slightly lower than seen in younger adults, citing preliminary results from an early to mid stage trial .

CanSino Biologics and China National Biotec Group have also kicked off testing in countries including Brazil, Russia, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Peru, Chile and Morocco.
